The development of snowboarding was inspired by skateboarding, sledding, surfing and skiing. Snowboarding is a popular winter sport that involves riding a single board down a ski slope or on a half pipe snow ramp.

Chris Sharma In professional climbing, where talent burns hot and fast, a decade is a long time. Ankles snap. Shoulders pop from sockets. Fingers calcify. And those rare talents that don't succumb to nagging injuries often falter beneath the mental pressure.

Picking projects at your physical and mental limits means constant exposure to the reality of failure. The struggle crushes many, weeding out the strong-fingered charlatans from the lifers. Above it all reigns Chris Sharma, 26, an athlete endowed with unparalleled physical strength and mental tenacity, dominating world sport climbing and bouldering for the last dozen years.

Last July, six years after his historic ascent of Realization the first confirmed 5.15a in the world Sharma returned to Ceüse to tick another monster, Three Degrees of Separation, redpointed on July 23. This 5.14d follows desperate climbing up tufas and micro crimps to series of three spectacular, all points off dynos, a hyper dynamic line one French climber deemed "c'est moderne." For someone who's spent the last decade on the road, the Ceüse trip was a coming home of sorts. Close friend David Graham, who became the first American to repeat Realization, on July 30, was there, as well as climber Ethan Pringle (who became the third American to repeat Realization).

Bouldering

Bouldering is one of the most effective way to improve both power and technique. The style of Bouldering unique to the sport. The routes are typically short and require high strength, vs endurance as in lead or top roping. The routes are interesting, dynamic and powerful, and do not require ropes or a harness or belay partner. Due to the lack of traditional protection, the height of routes is in the range of 12' or 4m. Many Climbers prefer this to any other form of the sport. Now, almost all indoor walls and gyms offer a Bouldering cave or dedicated area within the gym. Bouldering has evolved and matured into its own style and category of the sport.

Bouldering requires the least amount of Climbing gear. All you need for Bouldering is:
  • Rock climbing shoes
  • Chalk bags
  • and a padded place to land or crash pads

The uncoated panels allowed for some truly remarkable problems that spanned from demanding rather old school but highly refined climbing skills to the most new school jumps.

The problems only had one thing in common: they were all awkward! As chief route setter Percy Bishton put it: "A nightmare for the competitors, but hey, I'm not paid for being nice!" For the audience That was one of the best Boulder World Cups ever!

Touring Bikes

For most of us on our daily rides, the bike is a flamboyant companion. You stand on the pedals and feel it sprint underneath you. You lean into a corner and feel its reassuring steering geometry. You surge up a hill, and the bike is an eager partner. You see a pothole, you jump the bike over the pothole, and all is well.

When you add a sizable amount of touring gear, the relationship changes. The bike is still there, but it’s less flamboyant. Loaded with panniers, it’s more like a slow moving workhorse. It corners a bit more slowly (but still with that reassuring feeling) because you’re riding more slowly. It laughs if you try to sprint or climb quickly. And you can forget about jumping potholes. But the bike stays with you for thousands of miles.

The same bike can have both those personalities. A good touring bike will be your spry fun riding around home bike and your uncomplaining pack mule on an extended adventure.

If you decide you want to purchase a touring bike, you’ll probably have to order it because most shops keep zero to one touring bikes in stock, and Murphy’s Law dictates that they will not stock one in your size. Now here’s the big secret, and the reason why I’m comfortable telling you to not sweat the lack of a test ride: they all ride very similarly to one another.
